Does TEFL require fluent English?

TEFL does not require you to be a native English speaker, but it does require a high level of English proficiency. To complete a TEFL course and teach effectively, you need to understand English grammar, explain language points clearly, give instructions, correct student errors, and communicate confidently in spoken and written English. For many teaching positions, fluent or near-fluent English is strongly preferred. Non-native English speakers can absolutely become successful TEFL teachers. In fact, many bring valuable experience to the classroom because they understand the challenges of learning English as an additional language. What matters most is your ability to use English accurately, speak clearly, and help students improve. Requirements can vary by employer and country. Some schools may ask for proof of English proficiency, such as an interview, written test, or an exam score, while others focus more on your TEFL certification, teaching skills, and classroom confidence. A quality TEFL course, such as those offered by ITTT, can help you strengthen your understanding of grammar, lesson planning, and teaching methods. In short, you do not have to be a native speaker to take TEFL or teach English, but you should have strong English skills and the confidence to use them professionally.
