Does TEFL require an exam?

There is no single worldwide TEFL exam that everyone must take in order to become TEFL certified. Instead, TEFL certification is normally awarded by completing a training course that includes its own assessments. Depending on the course, these assessments may include multiple-choice quizzes, written tasks, lesson plan assignments, grammar checks, teaching methodology questions, or a final test. The purpose of these assessments is to make sure you understand key areas of English language teaching, such as classroom management, grammar, lesson planning, teaching skills, error correction, and how to work with different learner levels. In many online TEFL courses, assessment is completed throughout the course rather than through one high-pressure final exam. For example, ITTT’s online TEFL certification courses include course-based testing so trainees can show they have understood each section before qualifying for their certificate. Some course options may also include tutor support or practical teaching-related tasks, depending on the format selected. So, while TEFL usually does require assessment, it does not typically require a separate government-style licensing exam. If you are comparing TEFL courses, look for one that clearly explains how you will be evaluated and what you need to complete to receive your certificate.
