Just like the superlative, knowing how to form correct comparisons is very important in English. Let's take a look at how comparison works in the English language.

One Syllable Adjectives

  • add ‘-er‘ to end of the adjective.

For example: 

  • cheap – cheaper
  • hot – hotter
  • high – higher

 

Two-Syllable Adjectives Ending in ‘-y’  

  • add ‘-ier‘ to end of the adjective.

For example: 

  • happy – happier
  • friendly – friendlier

 

Other two-syllable adjectives and adjectives with 3 or more syllables

  • use more + the adjective.

For example: 

  • careful – more careful
  • interesting – more interesting
