It has been reported that beginning the process of learning a second language at a young age is the most effective way to succeed. According to research, the best time to start learning a second language is between the ages of eleven and thirteen. This is when the brain is still developing.

Several studies show that children as young as five to seven may miss the optimal language learning period. Another study suggests starting language instruction before age ten for achieving native-like grammatical fluency.

Yet other studies say that Language acquisition can begin during pregnancy. Unborn children can respond to auditory stimuli, distinguishing native from non-native sounds. A baby's exposure to language while they are still in the womb may influence the development of their language skills. Even though it is obvious that formal language learning cannot take place during pregnancy, there is evidence to suggest that language acquisition can begin prior to birth.

There is no universally sanctioned response to the question of what age children should start learning a second language. Having said that, the consensus among researchers is that the most effective way to acquire a second language is to begin the process during early childhood. Furthermore, it is significantly more difficult for children who are older than fifteen years old or adults to acquire a second language to the same level as a native speaker.
