Teaching is probably one of the most rewarding professions that can exist. I've always dreamed to be a teacher, being able to make a difference and be the one students can look up to. This opportunity was given to me when an English training institute from China called Web international English (also called Web) hired me as an ESL teacher. The web is a private English school which provides different class sizes such as VIP(1 to 1), Private(1 to 4), Salon(1 to 10) and Social(1 to 25+). These various courses helped me to differentiate and experience the difference between teaching one to one and groups.

What Is Missing In School English Lessons?
Elizaveta Pachina
Alumni Experiences
The English language is complex, but it becomes even more so when we consider the differences informality. In most classrooms for second language learners, the 'formal' version of English is taught. This is important so that students learn the grammar and vocabulary necessary for proper speaking and writing skills. However, the use of 'informal' language with slang and idioms is just as common in everyday life and can vary depending on the region. Both offer unique benefits to the learner, but only the formal style is generally taught in class.

Designing Syllabus for Flawless Lessons - TEFL Blog

Teaching Ideas
Designing the syllabus of a course is one of the greatest challenges a teacher has to face and undertake way in advance to the actual implementation of the said syllabus – and before the actual beginning of any language course. When a teacher starts to plan a syllabus, he/she may not even have an exact, clear and set idea of what is expected of him/her and the students to achieve and complete during and by the end of the course. Still, planning is essential as it can save a lot of time for everyone involved, eliminate many problems, and provide the teacher with a framework and a starting point for plans and modifications.

Group Teaching or Private Lessons? - TEFL Blog
Elizaveta Pachina
Alumni Experiences
First of all, there's a great difference between teaching one-to-one and groups. Some teachers prefer teaching one-to-one as it gives teachers a better opportunity to focus on one student rather than giving attention to many students. Also, there are differences regarding the classroom of each type. For example in teaching groups, classrooms are more formal. That's why there would be more discipline in classrooms of groups. On the other hand, in teaching one-to-one, the classroom can be anywhere either in the student's home if lessons are private or even in the teacher's home.

Different Types of ESA Lessons - TEFL Blog

TEFL Information Teaching Ideas
If every single lesson that we undertook with our students was a straight arrow ESA lesson then it is quite possible that the students would be able to predict what is going to come up next. Whilst this might be good for the lower level students, it could potentially become a little bit boring for our higher level students. Harmer considered this and his response was to generate two other types of ESA lesson that we can use to try and generate a little bit more interest.

Creating Materials Suitable for Your Lessons - TEFL Blog

Creating materials is, in my opinion, an enjoyable and resourceful pastime. Ahead of the lesson in which they may be used, I think it helps with the teacher's ability to understand learning objectives for a lesson. Furthermore, it provides clarity for children (if this is the age group of the class) and contributes significantly to their level of motivation. It is important to note that in creating something that will then be the basis for learning, various topics of interest can be covered. Similarly, materials may be geared towards exploring popular culture and therefore encouraging discussion of ideas or opinions. I think it is safe to say that whether a teacher is dealing with children or an adult group, materials that have been hand-made add an... [Read more]
