The Place of Grammar in TEFL
Grammar, more often than not, has been a subject of great scrutiny and dislike amongst students of all ages and all levels, either because they find it complicated or simply not fond about it because of the memory that the exams in school were always difficult or it was easy for the teachers to correct and put the students on the spot for being unable to differentiate between the tenses.

The Main Principles of Building Confidence in the ESL Classroom
A learned language isn't something to be kept on a shelf, slowly collecting dust, forgotten like any other book or relic. It must be held close and treasured, and used so that it is an extension of oneself. For true understanding, all the aspects of a language must be carefully developed until mastery. There are diverse aspects to practice in every language; the inflections and accent understanding of listening, the pronunciations and cadence of speaking, the grammar and structure of writing. Despite all these various skills and the pieces that compose them, they all come from the same source and the same primary skill, one that... [Read more]

Should Slang and Idioms be Taught in the Classroom?
When one imagines an English language lesson, one probably pictures vocabulary drills, dictionaries, and verb conjugations. While these are all aspects that one will most likely find should they sit in on a class, perhaps there can be something fun, useful, and entertaining to be found as well, something like a lesson on slang and idioms.
Table of Contents
The use of slang and idioms are very commonplace in conversations for native English speakers.

So, how would an instructor teach this type of language?

My Personal Vision of Rapport Building
One thought, in particular, stood out to me as I was reading Unit 6 of the Business English course. That was how to relate to others who are from different cultures around the world. So as a teacher relating to students means in my mind establishing connections (establishing rapport). I believe rapport is the foundation that binds a teacher to students. Without rapport, there's no trust and poor communication which is the opposite of what I am trying to achieve.

Teaching Idioms and Slang: Why Learning Idioms and Slang Connects Cultures
When it comes to learning a new language, the way that we make it comfortable for us is to try and relate it to our language. How many times have you met someone from another country and you ask them how to use swear words or how to say something is cool in their native language. Since English is very commonly spoken all over the world, for students to learn idioms and slang is for them to not only learn how to say certain things but get a deeper cultural understanding. With that deeper understanding comes relativity to their own lives, which means they see the ways that we are more similar instead of different.

The TEFL course (Unit 6) discusses how cultural considerations are important when teaching abroad. This includes cultural sensitivity when interacting with the young learners themselves, as well as in interacting with parents and school staff (administration/teachers).
