Why Complete a tefl course When I decided I wanted to teach abroad, I discovered that I would need to take a TEFL/tesol course. To be honest, I didn?t really understand why. I was actually kind of frustrated that I had to take more training to do something I knew how to do. After all, I?m graduating with a BA in English and a BS in Education; I was a substitute teacher for two years. shouldn?t I be able to teach the language I?ve used my entire life? I had no idea how wrong I was. There are skills that I?ve used my entire life that I didn?t even know I possessed; my ability to understand and use correct grammar based on how it ?sounds? or works with other words has never really been addressed before. Before this course, I?d never even contemplated how to teach something I just inherently understood. After all, if so many people use English in the world, surely it cannot be that difficult to learn. It seems relatively simple to me. Once again, I had no idea how wrong I was. This course has opened up my eyes to the sheer amount of skills and material I will have to teach a class of students who do not speak English. According to a TEFL company provider?s website (http://www.i-to-i.com/about-tefl-course.html), tefl courses ?enable you to live and work abroad for as long as you want, give you the opportunity to immerse yourself in a foreign culture, give you the chance to make a positive impact on the lives of people around the world, and fuel your desire to each and travel.? It seems too good to be true, but through my experiences with the ITTT tefl course, I?ve been able to see how much this course could impact my teaching decisions and even my life in general. In my opinion, tefl courses are required in many teaching abroad programs for one reason, and one reason only: it is a wakeup call to all those who are contemplating teaching English to nonnative speakers. It weeds out the people who have no idea what they?re getting themselves into. It highlights the weaknesses of the people who think that teaching abroad would be a fun vacation. tefl courses (especially this one) give a small taste of the difficulties and workload a teacher of foreign language will encounter. tefl courses also give potential teachers the opportunity to see what creating lesson plans, creating materials, and changing curriculum will be like. Some units even detail what specific speakers will have difficulty with in regards to pronunciation, participation, etc? Another TEFL company (http://www.teach-english-worldwide.com/why-tefl.html) states that ?tefl certification enables the teacher to gain experience in English teaching even before stepping into the classroom? The English teacher leaves the course feeling more competent to deal with the ever changing needs of people who study the language.? This is definitely how I felt about my tefl course through ITTT; it really gave me a confidence boost when I was faced with challenges that I was able to conquer. I realized that though the job will be difficult, I will be able to overcome the challenges that arise. I would recommend a TEFL/tesol course to anyone considering teaching abroad because it?s a great way to figure out if it?s something you really want to do. After this course, my resolve is even stronger, and I know that teaching abroad is the right choice for me.
