Does TEFL require experience?

In most cases, you do not need previous teaching experience to take a TEFL course or begin looking for entry-level English teaching jobs. TEFL certification is specifically designed to prepare new teachers with the basic skills they need, including lesson planning, classroom management, grammar awareness, teaching speaking and listening, and working with different learner levels. That said, job requirements can vary by country, school, and teaching context. Many language schools hire first-time teachers who have completed a solid TEFL certification course. Other employers, especially international schools, universities, or higher-paying private programs, may ask for prior classroom experience, a degree, or additional qualifications. If you are new to teaching, completing a TEFL course is a practical first step. ITTT offers online TEFL and TESOL certification courses that are suitable for beginners, as well as in-class options for those who want face-to-face training. Gaining experience through tutoring, volunteering, conversation practice, or teaching online can also strengthen your resume. So, while TEFL itself does not require experience, having a certification and some practical exposure can make you more confident and more competitive when applying for teaching positions.
