Does TEFL require a degree?

No, you generally do not need a college degree to take a TEFL certification course. TEFL courses are designed to train people to teach English as a foreign language, and many providers, including ITTT, offer online TEFL options that are open to both degree and non-degree holders. What matters most for course enrollment is usually your English ability, motivation, and willingness to learn teaching methods, lesson planning, grammar awareness, and classroom management skills. However, the answer can be different when it comes to getting hired. Some schools, employers, and countries prefer or require teachers to have a bachelor’s degree, especially when a work visa is involved. In other cases, a TEFL certificate, strong English skills, and relevant experience may be enough to find opportunities, particularly for online teaching, volunteer teaching, tutoring, or positions in markets with more flexible requirements. If you do not have a degree, earning a reputable TEFL certificate can still improve your teaching prospects and help you build confidence as a new teacher. It is a good idea to research the requirements for your target country, employer type, or online teaching platform before choosing a course or applying for jobs.
