TEFL 120-hour Course - Unit 12

This episode of Chantelle?s TEFL video diary looks unit 12 of her online course. Unit 12 focuses on the two productive skills speaking and writing. The unit looks at the difference between accuracy and fluency and also discusses activities that can be used to encourage speaking and writing in both controlled and more creative situations. The unit discusses issues specific to writing such as handwriting, spelling, punctuation etc. It also looks at how games can be used in the classroom and encourages you to think about how to adapt different games for different language points.

Below you can read feedback from an ITTT graduate regarding one section of their online TEFL certification course. Each of our online courses is broken down into concise units that focus on specific areas of English language teaching. This convenient, highly structured design means that you can quickly get to grips with each section before moving onto the next.

This unit gave a good introduction to lesson planning. In addition it gave concrete examples of how to teach two learning points (future perfect simple and use of may/might) and provided specific ideas about the activities needed for each phase of the plan. There were several suggestions for each of the Engage, Study and Activate phases. This test itself provided even more ideas. The basic structure of a typical lesson should begin with an Engage phase and end with an activate stage. I have also learnt that there are benefits and disadvantages of one to one classes and group classes and the problems can be addressed. In the classroom, the teacher must be ready to be any of the following; the instructor, facilitator, policeman, psychologist and counsellor.
