How do I become a TEFL tutor? - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ TEFL FAQs
How do I become a TEFL tutor?
There are a number of EFL teaching scenarios that involve tutoring. The most obvious is that of one-to-one teaching. This can take place in a school, a language center, at a business or privately. Regardless of the teaching scenario, the route to becoming a TEFL tutor is basically the same as becoming a TEFL teacher.
In general there are three ways to gain the certification required to become a TEFL tutor. They all involve a course with a minimum of 120 hours of training.

This can be done from anywhere in the world with a computer and an internet connection. Typical 120-hour courses give you up to six months to complete the course, working at your own pace. These courses will cover the main aspects of EFL teaching, those being,... [Read more]

English as a global language Before English can be given the status of ?global language?, I think the term must be defined so we know the grounds to this statement. I don?t think that the term can be defined only by how many countries that use English as their mother tongue or how many people speak the language as their first. If that were the case, English could easily be compared to Spanish, Mandarin, and Hindi, which in fact have more native speakers of the... [Read more]

Is Grammar Still Important in Spoken English?
According to the Collins online dictionary, grammar is defined as "the ways that words can be put together in order to make sentences." The Oxford learner's dictionary defines grammar as "a person's knowledge and use of a language". If those two definitions were to be combined we could define grammar as the way we utilize the language knowledge we possess for the purpose of communication. In keeping with this definition then, it can be said that in order to communicate effectively, grammar is essential.

Innovation in Curriculum Design
The curriculum has been used in the past as a collection of topics and syllabuses for children and young people to be learned during their school years. However, this definition does not do justice to the wider outcomes required by the real world or to the complexity of what many teachers are actually doing to promote the well-being of children and young people. It fails to define the overall objectives that the program is supposed to serve. Learning is often greatly influenced by when and how success is evaluated and how the effects of measurement are used. Therefore, evaluation needs to be seen as an important part of the process of learning. Consequently, the study has... [Read more]

Teacher’s Self-Analysis: Which Aspect to Improve for Better Teaching
A teacher's job is to teach pupils. While that sounds straight forward the question arises what makes a good teacher. If a teacher teaches all day, the outcome of the work lies in what was being taught. Pupils are taught what the teacher teaches. Now an easy thing to say is, that a good teacher should provide good teaching. But what would be, if the majority of students would not learn anything in a specific lesson, that would be regarded by other teachers as good teaching? The answer, of course, is, that all students are individuals and respond differently to the teaching. Making it dependent on the students, a more practical definition of good teaching is: Good... English in The United Kingdom and in The United States of America
When I started my ITTT classes, I wasn't totally sure of the difference between British English and American English. I knew there were accents and pronunciation differences, but it seemed like no big deal. Then I learned more about grammar, vocabulary, idioms, and spelling. When you speak to someone who has never spoken or has very little knowledge of the two, I can see how things get really confusing. British English is a bit more formal and follows the Kings English, where American English is a little bit more laid back.

How do I make a good TEFL lesson plan?
The rationale behind planning TEFL lessons is a crucial aspect to consider because it shapes the content of our lesson plans. We plan lessons for several reasons such as:
i) To provide a structure to our lessons
ii) To provide a record of what has been taught
iii) To easily cross reference against any syllabus requirements of the course being taught
The latter two points aid in ensuring we meet all the course requirements by providing a comprehensive record of lessons conducted. The first point, providing structure, is arguably the most crucial as it maps out the expected course of the lesson. Before delving into an actual plan, we should ponder on the kind of information we need to document in the plan.

The author and motivational speaker Hilary "Zig Zig" Ziglar wrote, "Repetition is the mother of learning, the father of action, which makes it the architect of accomplishment." Drilling is defined as a teaching technique or method used when teaching a new language through extensive repetition by students, also aided through audio, oral, or even optical channels or props. As with other teaching methods, repetitive drilling has both advantages and disadvantages and has been deemed effective and ineffective over the years.

Why Drilling is a Common Teaching Method in an ESL Class
Drilling is a teaching method used by teachers, teaching languages or other subjects, all over the world. Generally, drilling involves the teacher saying or modeling something to the class and the students repeating it. There are many ways of using the drilling method. Some teachers may use it sparingly in class while others may use the method so often it becomes the main way their students acquire new information.

Is Teaching Slang and Idioms Important for ESL Students?
Slang and idioms are often omitted from the formal education curriculum. According to the Cambridge dictionary, slang is defined as a "very informal language that is usually spoken rather than written, used especially by particular groups of people" and an idiom is defined as "a group of words in a fixed order that have a particular meaning that is different from the meanings of each word on its own". This essay will suggest possible reasons why slang and idioms are often excluded from formal English lessons, and posit that it is important to teach them to certain groups of ESL students namely, students who have moved to an English-speaking country with little or no prior... Teaching English Idioms as an Important Part of Language Acquisition
It was my first experience teaching in Taiwan and I was in charge of teaching ESL to 7th-11th graders. I had never taught out of the United States and never considered the possibility that my students wouldn't understand, what I thought, was simple English. I asked my junior high students to "put on their thinking caps," to "line up single file," "to quit fooling around" and that English was as "easy as ABC." I told my senior high students to "give me a show of hands" and told them if they "studied hard" and "hit the books," they would "pass with flying colors." I told my college students I would give them an "A for effort" if they "quit goofing off" and "skipping... [Read more]

First Language Acquisition and How it Informs Our Approach to Teaching Second Language
This topic, in particular, is of great interest to me as someone who managed to acquire two languages (Mandarin Chinese and English) at a high level. For me the journey was completely painless and the word 'acquired' is fitting since I personally never felt I had to actively undergo a 'study' to learn either language, but this statement is dependant on how we define studying and learning languages, and in turn: teaching languages. People often use the phrase 'It's like learning a whole new language' when trying to express how difficult and confusing it is to learn something, yet learning new languages shouldn't be harder than learning any other...
