Below you can read feedback from an ITTT graduate regarding one section of their online TEFL certification course. Each of our online courses is broken down into concise units that focus on specific areas of English language teaching.

Receptive skills, from my own experience, are things that are sometimes learned on our own and sometimes taught by others. We are taught to read and listen for a purpose to help us better understand school readings and lessons, but we read and listen for entertainment based on personal interests. Although when teaching these skills, the topic material should still be something that students will enjoy or are already familiar with. This unit covered best practices concerning use of classroom materials. Most would agree that while textbooks provide concrete, predictable, and structured lessons, they can be overused, non-engaging, and are not tailored to meet individual student needs. Therefore, teacher created materials and authentic materials fill the inadequacies of textbooks, but are often much more difficult to find or are more time-consuming to create.
