Types of English Teaching Positions in China

TEFL positions in China can be divided into three main categories: private schools, university work, and freelance teaching.

Universities are generally lower paid and begin around 3,000 Yuan per month. On top of that, you’ll have free accommodation in return for around 15 hours of in-class teaching every week. Students tend to be more engaging and you will have time to do additional work to augment your salary. Universities also tend to be more consistent with pay and offering assistance with visas and other paperwork.

You can expect to earn about 5,000 Yuan per month and up by teaching in a private school. Here you can expect around 20 hours of in-class teaching per week. Accommodation is typically provided, or the school might offer more salary if it is not.

Freelance teaching work is abundant and simple to obtain--either through the two previous situations or through students you find on your own. Typical fees begin around 100 Yuan per hour and can go as high as demand dictates. Charging 200 Yuan hour is reasonable if it means preparation and travel time. Please bear in mind that officially, you still need the proper paper work and written permission if you want to teach freelance.

Noteworthy Advice on TEFL Jobs in China

First and foremost, be sure that the school you are signing a contract with has a good reputation. Talk to the school’s current teachers and ask to be put in contact with them during your interview. Red flags should go up if this request is not granted. The school should be willing to put the terms of your employment in a contract and answer all the questions you have about the conditions you will be working in. Do not accept vague answers. Look for specific information that can be quantified and/or qualified.

Be sure to ask about class sizes, hours of work, details about salary, housing, paperwork and any other important information you’ll need in order to make an informed decision. This is not a complete list of things to ask, but it provides you with a base with which to work upon.

Securing a TEFL Job in China

There are many ways to find jobs in China. If it makes you feel better to find a job before you arrive, you can often use a recruiting firm to secure a TEFL Job. Be sure that you have a contract from the school itself and have looked into the recruiting agency as well as the school itself.

The demand for teacher is so high that you only need to be a native speaker. However, if you’d like to find a good job, you’ll need certification such as that from TEFL International. If you have no experience, nor qualifications and you’re considering teaching for longer than the very short term, you really should look into getting the TEFL/TESOL certificate from TEFL International. This will increase your earning potential and give you the necessary teaching skills to perform your job effectively.

Attend weekly meetings with the LLD to communicate all pertinent student and classroom management issues.  Participate in outside of classroom academic, marketing and Center social events as needed. Provide private lessons to young language learners as required due to learner absences or for students that are falling behind the class. Deliver both formal and informal assessments and progress reports throughout the program and keep close oversight on all learner records. Interact with both parents and young language learners in a way that makes language learning fun, engaging and educational. With local Assistant Trainers, maintain strong communication with parents as to their children's progress by means of the Teacher/Parent portal and ongoing communication during performances, phone calls and parent/teacher conferences.
