It is hard to say what you'll find most breathtaking about Rome…the Eternal City. Rome, the capital of Italy, is the country's largest and most populous city and is thoroughly modern and cosmopolitan. As one of the few major European cities that escaped World War II relatively unscathed, central Rome remains essentially Renaissance and Baroque in character. The Historic Centre of Rome is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
One of the symbols of Rome is the Colosseum, the largest amphitheatre ever built in the Roman Empire, originally used for gladiatorial combat. The city hosts a list of important monuments including the Roman Forum, the Pantheon, the Catacombs of Rome, the Circus Maximus and the Bocca della Verita.
There are many festivals throughout the year - Rome is the city where most cultural events such as exhibitions, concerts and shows take place in Italy. These include everything from fashion through to modern art and theatre, music and dance, with artists from all over Europe appearing.
