that and then you can also just drop your questions in at any time
um let's have a conversation uh just something casual something fun to get to know each other

also very successful in teaching english she also taught english in china and now she's teaching mostly in russia
and online and she has a she has really really really great tips for non-native english teachers but also
native english teachers i learned so much from her uh especially like lesson planning

the intro let me just check if i don't miss anything but yeah let me add
this here to the stream so we know what's happening for people who are joining later so we are doing a q a um
so that means you have the opportunity to ask me questions about teaching english abroad teaching english
online about itttt about tefl courses and tesol courses and all of that good
stuff so this is what we're doing today and i
also prepared like i said a couple of questions um that i found that most people ask online
and that we at idt get asked a lot so i want to clarify those questions and then we can start having a
conversation and you have the opportunity to ask your questions and please don't be shy don't be quiet
this is there is no stupid question um i don't want this to be quiet it's
really important that you ask questions today so it's not just me sitting here and talking you know how it works during my
live sessions i love hearing from you guys and hearing what you have to say and learn from your
experience as well because i know a lot of people here already have teaching experience and you are tefl certified and you also have
something to add to this conversation here um some of you guys are already
itt grads which is awesome and some people are not yet so we can have this conversation and
share our experience and our knowledge together today i hope that sounds good
um yeah first off let me know where you guys are in the world at the
moment where are you watching from what time is it there um and how are you doing how are you
doing i'm doing pretty good um it is 10 a.m friday here in south korea
i live about an hour and a half south of seoul in a city called chongju and um
yeah that's where i am today i'm originally from i was born and raised in germany
near munich about an hour from munich and my mom is german and my dad is american
and from a really young age i was super interested into foreign languages and growing growing up in europe it's so
easy to travel around so i've always been interested in different countries in different languages and that's sort
of how i got into um yeah finding opportunities to go abroad and i
learned french and spanish in school and then i was looking for something different and i was torn between
japanese and mandarin chinese and then i opted for mandarin and that's how sort of i ended
up in china and then also in south korea so
i'm all about asia you're also going to see that when you go to my um personal
instagram and also my personal website is the same linda goes east.com it's basically a uh
yeah a site about traveling in asia and hidden gems but also must
see popular places all around asia nowadays um a lot of korea content
obviously a lot of china content but also southeast asia content and also
my instagram you can see uh i've i actually just got back from a trip
to um the south of korea really like the coast down down in the coast in the south it
was really really beautiful so you're gonna see a lot of that content coming up soon on my instagram so check that out
and then yeah juliana's still in illinois great so juliana says i'm watching from illinois
it is 8 10 here so thursday right thursday 8 10 p.m i assume
awesome so what time difference does that make 10 hours i think i think it's 10 hours
maybe not no it's more than that i'm really bad at this um
anyway it's a big time difference okay cool then i appreciate you guys
thanks for leaving your comments so i want to start off with a question
that we get quite a lot and a lot of people are confused about this so that's what i want to talk about this
first and that is what is the difference between tefl and tesol right because we hear the two
terms all the time also if you look on our website we always mention tefl
and tesol so a lot of people are asking what's the difference which one should i get um you know
what's the deal with those two acronyms and basically so tefl stands for teaching english as a foreign
language and tesol stands for teaching english to speakers of other languages
so when we break this down it basically comes down to the same thing right teaching english as a foreign language
or teaching english to speakers of other languages so those terms basically mean
the same thing and that's why also the training whether you get tefl or t cell training
um the training involves the exact same components you're going to learn about
classroom management you're going to learn about lesson planning you're going to learn about english grammar
you're going to learn about the different types of students different types of teacher functions
yeah a lot you're going to learn a lot about a lot um but the same content whether you're
taking a tefl or a tesol course so at itt what you can do is you can decide
whether your certificate at the end should say tefl or tesol so you you're flexible
with that and the reason for that is that some regions in the world and that is so some regions of the world
hughes prefer one term over the other so basically um
europe and i believe australia uh south africa they tend to use the
term tefl more whereas the us and canada um
they tend to prefer the term tesol but they are the same right so
it just depends on where you're from you might hear tesol more or tefl more
but the training is exactly the same and so we give you the option um to choose do you want your
certificate to say tefl or do you want it to say tesol so you can decide based on where you're from you know what
more what the people where you're from are more um used to hearing more used to using so
it's going to depend on that but yeah that is the difference i just wanted to mention that right of
the bat today because we do get a lot of questions about that
and um yeah i think that's really great so my certificate i can show you real quick
my certificates let's see this one this one is the 120
hour certificate and so i chose tefl on it so you're going to see
i hope you can see that um yeah so here where it says no here where it
says the itt 120 are tefl course so here you could choose
either tefl or tesol but as you can see the top here says international tefl and t salt
training so that's what ttt stands for i t t t international tefl and t cell training
so no matter what you're going to see the both terms on your certificate tefl and
tesol that's very important because we do get a lot of questions about that so i just wanted to
let you guys know so that there's no confusion from the start okay but maybe most of
you knew this already but just making sure and then another question we also often get
is do tefl or tesol courses expire or basically do the certificates expire
um so we also get this question quite a lot and i just wanted to show you again
this is a certificate what it looks like and it says when you
uh completed the course when you achieved your certificate there's no expiration
date so tefl certificates do never expire they never expire
and one other great thing that you will find on your certificate is this unique number right here
and what you can do with this number is or what basically it's used for employers
or schools and what they can do is they can take this number and punch
it into our website to verify that this certificate that you show them
really is a accredited itt tefl or tesol certificate because
typically what you will do when you apply for a teaching position you won't actually send in your physical
your physical certificate in your application you will apply apply online so you would
send in a pdf right and pdfs are
easy easier to fake and so what the employer then can do to
make sure that you're not sending him a photoshopped certificate they can punch in this number to make
sure that this is a real certificate that really you took the course and you earned it and
you are really certified so that's the purpose of that but teflor tissue courses they never
expire however um there's obviously always changes happening in the
teflon teasel industry so that's why we also always sort of um you know add new courses to our
portfolio or to our range of courses that you can then take and add to your portfolio if that makes sense
so about a year almost two years ago we introduced the teaching english online
course because of you know all the inter uh the transitions to teaching english online and then
that's when a lot of people took that specialized course as sort of
an add-on so obviously that's what you can also do but they never expire but it's never a
bad idea to you know get more certificates to add them onto your portfolio
to stay up to date with your with you know the teaching community and what's happening in the teaching world
so yeah and also actually lisa my co-worker she talks about that quite a lot there's a lot of
online you know look those um course platforms online course platforms like coursera
udemy places like that that offer free courses also a lot of teaching related courses
that you can take to sort of stay up to date um on what's happening in the teaching world so those are always really
recommended as well
oh yeah juliana says it's a 14-hour time difference yeah my bad not 10 hours thanks juliana
good ah i think i wanted to mention one more thing i forgot now about the
certificate okay yes i remember now so i said remember i said when you apply
typically you would apply uh sending in your pdf you would apply online however for some
countries and this is especially true for china uh when you apply for your chinese visa
to go to china to teach you actually need to go to the embassy to
um give them all your paperwork and one of the requirements to get your teaching visa in china
is um a tefl certificate so there you would actually give them your
original and they would check it and make copies of it and that's why this is also important
that um this number because this number they would also use and then verify
if this is a real tefl certificate i just wanted to mention that so it's not true that you only need your pdf
version obviously you're also going to need your paper embossed paper version of the
certificate as well depending on where you go but just for applying
um to your job you know to a teaching position you're not going to send them originals
and there was actually a live session that i did a couple of weeks ago about all the documents that you need when
teaching english abroad so i highly recommend checking that out i'm going through all the different documents
uh the certificate obviously but also things like um
what was it like passport obviously passport criminal background checks reference
letters a resume and the differences in like a tefl resume and things like that
so check that out it's in our playlist and yeah good
so that was the second question that i have prepared that a lot of people are asking and
please feel free to at any time if a question comes to your mind just to type it into the
comments comment box so that i can see it and then i'll i'll be happy to answer that as well for you
um and another question that we get or that i see a lot online when i do um
you know market research or just when i'm online and i search for tefl and stuff uh what is the
best tefl or tesol certification program right uh we see this a lot on different
platforms you know reddit or quora or yahoo answers places like that
and you know this question is really hard to answer because it just depends on what your goal is
what you want to do with it you know so if for example you want to just go abroad
you want to go abroad to teach um you know for just a year
you know nothing long term short term or even shorter than a year then uh you know the it's going to be a
different we would recommend a different kind of tefl certification program compared to somebody who wants to who
knows exactly like oh yeah i want to go to dubai and stay there for five years
and you know work for an international school like this is it's it's going to depend on what your
goal is so it's very hard to say uh what is the best tefl
certification program but there are a lot of options and that's why it's really important
for you to take the time as so many of you are doing uh listening to our different live
sessions looking at our website and obviously not only our website our other tefl providers websites as
well to then make an educated and smart decision for what fits best with your needs
and what i'm here for and also my colleague is here for to help you guide you through that
um decision making process right to help you find the best possible tefl or tesol
certification program that fits with your goal and your needs and your
qualification background and things like that so at itt and most other tefl course
providers we offer three different types of courses so that is online
tefl courses in-class tefl courses and combined tefl and tesol courses
um so at the moment obviously in class is a little bit difficult in class courses what that
means is you would go to an actual tefl school usually in
a location of your choice abroad in a different country we have over 30 different locations
available some of them obviously are closed at the moment or they do not
accept or you can't like travel there so it would only be for people who are already in the country
some locations are open so if you're interested in that check it out on the website we have
detailed information for every different location um so there's one option and you would
spend four weeks at that center and you are basically like in a classroom
you're learning uh all about teaching tefl the theoretical parts with
a other you know other group of teacher trainees and the teacher trainer
is an experienced professional teacher who's been teaching english for a lot of years and he is or she is going
to teach you how to teach as well and you're also going to have the opportunity to teach real english students in that training
center so that is the in-class option the online option is the most popular option because it's
just so flexible so easy to do from anywhere in the world from the comfort of your home and you
can study at your own pace you don't have to go anywhere so that's why online courses are really really um
popular and you know a couple of years ago it was like oh only in-class courses are
uh accredited or are like what matters but nowadays um it's really shifted and
in class and online are really on the same level in terms of the certificate and also when you look at again when i
show you the certificate that i have this is also from an um from an online course
and it does not say online on the certificate anywhere it just says 120 hours
up here 120 hours so it doesn't say that you took this course online either
and then the combined option basically combines online within class so first
you would complete an on a theoretical part online at your own pace
and when you've completed that then you can go to a training center for between five and ten days depending
on the location and get your teaching practice component there so those are the differences
all right okay i have a couple of questions here
so let's see okay javier does i-c-o-e-s give
some kind of support on your certificate okay i see oh i need to check what that is
hold on i-c-o-e-s i-c-o-e-s
um okay so our certificates i see that this is a um accreditation
institution okay so our courses they are accredited by ott s a
o t t s and i'm going to um which is basically the same thing um as that what you've mentioned
so let me just show you this one our online courses are accredited by
ottsa which stands for the online tefl and tesol standards
agency and i've just pulled this up on the website it says the online tesol and
tefl standards agency is a professional educational organization dedicated to raising teacher training
industry standards specifically online courses in the teaching of english as a foreign
language okay so that is what um our courses are credited
by so check that out for more information highly recommended we also have a
accreditation tab on our website where you can also find out or our other partnerships and accreditations because
there's more than just otts a um so yeah check that out
and then juliana says the online class would be the best option for now i think so too because
it's just difficult and unpredictable but hopefully soon you know in class is going to
uh pick up again and actually we had someone watching a another regular watcher for our
live sessions brett i don't think he's here today and he's actually going to rome to do his in-class tefl course very soon
too i think in july so some locations are definitely open but it's also going to depend on
you know your nationality or where you live if you are able to travel there or not um
so that's you know it's going to depend on that um they're not old clothes being quest
centers but it's definitely a little bit more difficult yeah so awesome
and then another question that i want to talk about that we also get a lot is can i teach
english without a tefl or tesol qualification um so this is again
not an easy yes or no answer because it also is going to depend on where you want to
teach right so for example if you wanted to teach english in korea where i am
a tefl certificate is not an official requirement for to obtain a visa for example so a
lot of schools they do just hire people even without any teflon piece of qualification
it is definitely possible and there are many many other countries like that however then there's also
countries that i always like to compare with is china where when i taught
in china back in first 2012 and then 2014
i taught there a tefl certificate was not an official requirement but now
it is a requirement to get that teaching visa that work visa that you need to
live and work in china so things are changing all the time and also china is the biggest market for
teaching english as a foreign language it has the most amount of schools the most amount of job openings than anywhere else in the
world and a tefl certificate is a requirement there so if you want to go to china the answer
would be no you cannot teach english in china without a teflor t-cell qualification
um and even for countries like i mentioned here in korea it is not
a requirement however i was tefl qualified certified qualified and i that's why i got hired
at a better school in a better neighborhood or a better city and i earned a higher salary right from
the start compared to people who were not certified and also
so that's one point but the other side is also what if you you know now in korea it's not a
requirement to be tefl or teso certified but what if it will be you know in a year or two so um
you never know things are changing all the time so like i said when i was in china first it was not a requirement and then now it
is so um i think that having a tefl certificate is definitely going to be
you're going to be in this on the safe side it like it only has um benefits there are no real drawbacks
to it of course the financial could be a drawback but um like i said with a tefl
certificate or t-cell certificate you're usually going to earn a higher salary so then you're gonna get that money back
anyway that you spend on a tefl course um and also so that's the other thing right
just having this certification and piece of paper in your hand but the other side of tefl which is also
super important and a lot of people just don't really recognize is that a tefl course really
teaches you how to teach right because we as either native english
speakers or also learners of english we don't really know
how to teach we know how to speak english and we know probably a little bit about the grammar
some people might not even especially native speakers we don't really think about the grammar right um so that's why i think a tefl
certificate is even more important because you learn how to teach you learn how to manage a
class and what i think is the most important part of a tefl course is that it explains
the most important parts of english grammar and also not only that but it
shows you exactly what most english learners are struggling with when it comes to english
and how to deal with those problems so how can you deal with you know people
are struggling with this particular grammar point and then how what can what
can you do as a teacher to get your point across and to teach effectively um
because i think there's nothing more um embarrassing or just um hard when you're in a classroom
full of students and they don't understand what you're saying you're trying your hardest to explain something
but they just don't understand right it's not a good feeling that you want to be in
and it also looks bad probably in front of your co-teacher and your employer so you don't want to
be in that position that's just my opinion
all right great question from javier thanks so much javier asks how easy or hard is it to
get a job as an english teacher having a degree non-related to linguistics great
question we also do get the question quite a lot so basically uh for most places
in most types of schools the majority of places 90 percent i would say
you do not have to have a degree in english or tesol or linguistics
so for me for example i have a bachelor's in business and i was still able to
teach english abroad so typically it does not matter what your major is in
what matters is that you have a four-year degree for most places there are also places where you can
teach without a degree um so yeah however in
you know if you have a degree in english or in linguistics that's always
going to be a plus and that's also going to likely get you a higher salary
and access to some schools that are usually not that accessible to people
without that degree so like international schools for example and international schools they typically
pay a much higher salary so those are places where you could then go into or even universities
sometimes require you to have a bachelor's or master's in english or tesol or
linguistics but for the majority of teaching positions abroad it is not necessary not necessary
and i know a lot of people who um you know they moved abroad teach english with just their regular bachelor's
degree not teaching related and then they loved it so much that that they then decided to
get a master's degree in tesol or in teaching in linguistics and then they had access
to even better job opportunities they became head teachers at their schools
and things like that so it definitely helps but it is not a requirement
to have a degree in linguistics to teach abroad or also online
thanks so much for the question
okay keep them coming so those were how many one two three four of the most
asked questions that i've picked uh for today's live session
and um that's it from my side so keep your
questions coming i have a good one from mikey now how about if i have only a certificate
in education not teaching is it possible okay when
you say certificate uh what do you mean by certificate a degree four-year degree um in education
but not teaching so a lot of people ask us this actually so they are they have a
teaching license from their home country and then they want to go abroad to teach english right so then they're like well i have a
teaching license do i need to get a teflora tee saw and usually what we say is that yes
uh especially if we want to go to china again a teflon tesol is a requirement in china
regardless of whether you have a teaching license or not um however
there it's also different right so tefl again like we said in the beginning stands for teaching english as a foreign
language tesol stands for teaching english to speakers of other languages
so that is a very specific kind of teaching certification and if you have a
teaching license you likely have not covered the same
type of content that a teflor tesol course covers in terms of teaching english to
people who do not speak english as their first language
and that's what this is all about so um if i hope i'm making sense a teaching
license however does definitely make you know is a huge plus and actually a teaching license
is going to get you access to a job in an international school that's usually what they want to see
uh on top of a teflon tesol so they usually only hire people who have an actual teaching license
in their home country um so it's definitely a huge bonus and you can also ask for higher salary
if you have a teaching license from your home country however you would still need to get a
teflor tesol on top of that in most cases yeah i hope that answers the question
and i hope it making sense sometimes i feel like i'm rambling and i don't make sense but um just let me know and i'll clarify
again but thanks so much for asking mikey
all right just looking at other comments
yeah okay cool
hmm i think i've answered pretty much everything and also the questions that i wanted to cover
good good so keep your questions coming i'm still here for a little while and also don't forget
um you can always watch this in the replay and then ask questions and i will be able to get back to them later in the
comments as well so that's no problem at all no problem at all and also please don't forget the um
30 off link you can find it in the comments click on that or scan the qr code whatever it works
better for you and then you can get 30 off any teflor tesol cores
we like i said we only share this 30 off link in our live session so it's very very special
you don't want to miss it if you're not yet teflor tesol certified
and yeah
all right another question from mikey thanks so much can i apply for the diploma without doing certificate
in truffle okay now tefl is something different right we need to clarify
tefl is not full i'm just going to put that into the
comment box uh so i can show you so tefl is not tefl
right what does tefl stand for um it's a uh okay let me google that tefl
stands for truffle stands for test of english as a
foreign language test of english as a foreign language and it is a standardized test
to measure the english language ability of non-native speakers wishing to enroll in english-speaking
universities okay so that is something different that's an english proficiency test right
measuring how well you can speak english tefl is for teaching english as a
foreign language okay different thing different thing um so maybe your question is can i apply
for the diploma course without doing a certificate in tefl like without doing the tefl certificate
can i take the diploma and the answer is no at itt
our diploma course our tesol diploma course is based on
the certificate so first you complete the certificate
teflor tesol of 120 hours 20 units and then you're able to take
the tesol diploma course because that one is based on the basic um the basic
uh tefl course so you cannot do that yeah i thought so thanks for clarifying
though yeah but we do also get the question a lot we know you know people ask us about tefl
and that's just a really different thing however you know as a tefl teacher you might have to teach a tefl class
tefl prep right to prepare your students for taking the tefl test that can also happen but tefl and tefl
are not the same thing good i hope that answers your
question mikey uh okay so let me see i do
think that if you sign up um
i just want to make sure this is still the case we had this special deal that if you sign up for the
diploma you can actually get the 120 hour course
for free let me just check if we still have that i want to make sure just one second
and then i can send you that information so you can actually follow me if you
want you can click on that link the discounted link that i shared and then you'll see the application page
and then you would choose your course type online and then you can choose
ah yeah it's not there
so basically let me see [Music]
what you would have to do is do the i hear diploma yes it's here 370 hour t
cell diploma course we recently changed the name it used to be 250 hours
now it is 370 hours so 370 hour tesol
diploma course plus tutor and videos plus free course and then you can choose your free
course and you would choose 120 hour tefl teasel course so that is included
um and i'm just going to fill out this test application so i can tell you exactly how much it comes down to with the 30 percent off
let me just see
okay so it will come down to
419 dollars instead of 5.99 and that is the 120 hour course
plus the diploma so that's a really really good price 30 off
here with the 30 off link that i shared 419
tesol diploma plus uh 120 hour together the 120 hour tefl
course comes for free if you sign up for this diploma course
yes i can send you the link to your email um i can do that sure uh
how about i'm just gonna send you a facebook message after this live or you can also send me
an email linda t saw okay okay got it
all right i didn't want to share it with everybody but yeah okay all right i'm going to email you after
this live with the link in the instructions all right thanks mikey awesome
okay okay cool we have a question here about
teaching english online so what are typical wages to expect for newly certified tefl instructors
teaching online cool good question my colleague lisa she did a really
really great live session about teaching english online and the different platforms and because all the different platforms
have different wages and salaries so i highly recommend you check that out
you can find it you're watching on youtube so you just go to live our live videos and there is a live about um teaching
english online the different platforms something like that and not with me with my colleague
blonde hair so she goes over all the different platforms out and how much you can make there because it really
ranges and varies a lot and typically teaching online platforms
they would charge by the hour um so it ranges really anywhere
from 15 to 30 an hour or more it's it really depends on what platform you work for
i recently started teaching english online with a platform called cafe talk
um which is a very flexible platform you can basically um you create your profile and you can
create sort of the lessons the kind of lessons that you want to offer it's very flexible you don't have to teach
like the platform doesn't give you any material or any lessons uh from the platform itself but you can
structure that all by yourself so you can offer i offer like between 15
minute classes to an hour class so it's really flexible so it really depends and you can also
set your own price on there um so yeah
but like yeah between 15 and 30 dollars per hour even less sometimes it
really depends on the platform so i highly recommend you checking out lisa's life about that
okay cool all right uh i'm gonna wait just a
little bit longer to see if we have another question coming in and then if there is nothing more i'm going to sign
off this was really great thanks so much for your questions i highly appreciate it i hope you
learned something new today um and yeah it was so nice to see you all again also
some new people which is great there's going to be another live session um
next week and hopefully i'm going to find a new
different topic to talk about for next week yeah mikey asks what is
that platform would you mind sharing yeah it's called cafe talk that's the platform that i
teach on um yeah i it's my fourth month i think now i
started teaching on there it's really fun um so yeah if you're interested check it
out you can also offer like i offer english and german on there i am a native speaker of both
languages so you can basically offer anything on that platform which is really fun all
right caviar is asking could you make a 120 hours training and then upgrade for business english or young
learners or do i need to pay full package again great question so if you get the 120 hour
course with tutor support you get one free course on top of that so 120 hour
plus tutor and you can choose one of the um you can choose either the business english or the young learners course
and then yeah for free that is included if you choose the tutor support version
mike he says is it an app uh i think they i don't think they have an app now it's on just um
desktop computer no app
yeah cool uh please don't forget the 30 percent
off mikey i am going to email you about that i will send you the direct link with
instructions on how to get that good deal the diploma with the free 120
hour course um and yeah
i think i'm going to sign off now if there are no more questions coming in it was really really great to
talk to you today super happy about that all your questions coming in and uh yeah just a fun crowd and please
please please join us again next week for another live session
um and also my colleague lisa on tuesday don't miss out on that she has some really really
great content a lot of teaching tips and how to create lesson plans and lessons from scratch how to find
online teaching students so that's if you're into teaching english online definitely check
her out um yeah thank you mikey thanks so much
