When should I renew TEFL credentials?
In most cases, TEFL credentials do not need to be renewed because TEFL certificates typically do not expire. Once you complete a TEFL or TESOL certification course, you can continue to list it on your resume and use it when applying for English teaching positions. However, that does not mean your training should stay unchanged forever.
You may want to update or refresh your TEFL credentials if your certificate is several years old, if you have been away from teaching for a long time, or if you are applying for positions where employers prefer recent training. Language teaching methods, classroom technology, and online teaching tools can change over time, so professional development can make you more confident and competitive.
Instead of “renewing” a TEFL certificate, many teachers choose to take an additional course, such as a specialized certificate in teaching young learners, business English, teaching English online, or advanced TESOL methodology. ITTT offers online TEFL and TESOL certification options that can help new and experienced teachers strengthen their qualifications.
As a general guideline, consider refreshing your training every few years if you want to stay current, improve your teaching practice, or move into a new area of English language teaching.
