Is TEFL enough without experience?

A TEFL certification is often enough to begin teaching English even if you do not have previous teaching experience. Many entry-level employers understand that new teachers are just starting out and use TEFL or TESOL certification as proof that you have learned the basics of lesson planning, classroom management, grammar awareness, and teaching methods. That said, requirements vary by country, school, and online platform. Some employers prefer candidates with a bachelor’s degree or previous experience, while others are open to first-time teachers who have completed quality TEFL training. Having a strong resume, a clear introduction video for online teaching, and a willingness to teach young learners, beginners, or conversation classes can also improve your chances. If you are new to teaching, choosing a course with practical components can make a big difference. ITTT’s online TEFL and TESOL courses, for example, are designed to help beginners understand how to plan lessons, manage students, and present language effectively. You can also build experience through tutoring, volunteer teaching, language exchanges, or practice lessons with friends. In short, TEFL can be enough to get your first teaching opportunity, but your success will also depend on where you apply, how well you present yourself, and how prepared you are to keep learning on the job.
