How does TEFL compare to TESOL?

TEFL and TESOL both prepare teachers to teach English to non-native speakers, but the terms are used slightly differently. TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language and is most often associated with teaching English in countries where English is not the primary language. For example, a TEFL-certified teacher might work with students who need English for travel, school, business, or international communication. TESOL stands for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. It is a broader term that can include both TEFL contexts and teaching English to learners in English-speaking countries, such as immigrants, refugees, or international students. Because of this, TESOL is often used in academic or domestic education settings, while TEFL is commonly used for international English teaching jobs. In practical terms, the content of TEFL and TESOL certification courses is often very similar. Both typically cover lesson planning, grammar awareness, classroom management, teaching skills, and methods for developing speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Many employers use the terms interchangeably, especially for entry-level English teaching positions. ITTT offers online TEFL and TESOL certification options designed to help new and experienced teachers build practical teaching skills. When choosing between TEFL and TESOL, focus on the course quality, number of training hours, and whether it matches your teaching goals.
