Does TEFL require observations?

Whether TEFL requires observations depends on the type of course and the organization offering it. Some TEFL certification courses, especially in-class or combined programs, include observed teaching practice where trainees teach real or practice students and receive feedback from a qualified trainer. This can be very useful because it helps new teachers connect theory with actual classroom management, lesson planning, and student interaction. However, not every TEFL course requires live observations. Many online TEFL courses are designed to be flexible and self-paced, so they may assess trainees through quizzes, written tasks, grammar units, lesson plan assignments, or tutor-marked work rather than direct classroom observation. ITTT, for example, offers online TEFL and TESOL certification options for learners who need a flexible route, as well as classroom-based training for those who want practical, face-to-face experience. It is also important to separate course requirements from employer requirements. Even if your TEFL course does not include observations, a school or online teaching company may ask you to complete a demo lesson, trial class, or supervised teaching session before or after hiring. In short, observations are not universally required for TEFL certification, but they are a valuable feature if you want practical feedback and classroom confidence.
