Could TEFL replace a teaching degree?
A TEFL certification generally does not replace a teaching degree if your goal is to become a licensed teacher in a public or mainstream school system. Teaching degrees typically include broader education theory, supervised school placements, child development, curriculum design, and state or national licensing requirements. A TEFL certificate, by contrast, focuses specifically on teaching English as a foreign or second language.
That said, TEFL can be enough for many English teaching roles, especially in private language schools, online teaching platforms, tutoring, adult education, and some international EFL positions. Many employers look for a recognized TEFL or TESOL certificate because it shows you have training in lesson planning, classroom management, grammar awareness, and teaching language skills such as speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
Some jobs may also require a bachelor’s degree in any subject, while others may accept TEFL certification alone. Requirements vary widely depending on the school, country, age group, and type of position. ITTT’s TEFL and TESOL courses are designed to help new and experienced teachers build practical skills for English language classrooms, but they should not be seen as a substitute for official teacher licensure where that is required.
In short, TEFL can open doors to English teaching opportunities, but it does not usually replace a formal teaching degree for regulated school teaching careers.
