Can TEFL be transferred internationally?

A TEFL certificate can usually be used internationally, meaning you can apply for English teaching jobs in many countries with the same qualification. However, TEFL is not typically “transferred” in the same way as a teaching license or university credit. Instead, employers review your certificate to decide whether it meets their hiring standards. In many international TEFL markets, a 120-hour TEFL course is commonly considered the standard minimum for entry-level English teaching jobs. Schools may also look at whether the course included grammar, lesson planning, classroom management, and teaching methodology. Some employers may prefer candidates with observed teaching practice, prior experience, or a bachelor’s degree, depending on the country and type of school. It is also important to remember that visa and work permit requirements are separate from TEFL certification. A TEFL certificate can strengthen your job application, but it does not guarantee employment, a visa, or legal work status in any country. ITTT offers online TEFL and TESOL certification options that are designed for teachers who want to work internationally or teach English online. Before choosing a course or applying abroad, research the typical requirements for your target country and confirm what individual employers expect. This helps ensure your TEFL certification aligns with your teaching goals.
