Can accent affect TEFL jobs?

Accent can affect TEFL jobs, but it is only one factor among many. Some employers or parents may prefer teachers with accents they associate with “standard” English, such as American, British, Canadian, or Australian pronunciation. However, many reputable schools are more interested in whether a teacher speaks clearly, uses accurate grammar, and can help students communicate confidently in English. In real classrooms, clarity is usually more important than sounding like a native speaker from a particular country. English is a global language, and students often benefit from hearing different accents, especially if they plan to use English for travel, business, or international study. Teachers with non-native or regional accents can be highly effective if their pronunciation is understandable and they can model language accurately. That said, accent bias does exist in parts of the TEFL industry. A strong TEFL certification, such as those offered by ITTT, can help you demonstrate professional training in lesson planning, classroom management, grammar, and teaching methodology. It is also helpful to prepare a clear introduction video, speak at a natural but controlled pace in interviews, and highlight any previous teaching or language-learning experience. Overall, an accent may influence some hiring decisions, but it does not define your ability to be a successful English teacher. Professionalism, training, confidence, and clear communication matter greatly.
