Teaching English in South Korea

There are many opportunities for Teaching English in South Korea and being one of the most highly paid TEFL destinations, teaching English in Korea is a popular choice. Opportunities exist in both the state sector (universities) and Hogwons (private language schools). Most opportunities are at the thousands of Hogwons across the country. A large percentage of teachers gain employment in Seoul or Pusan although there are excellent employment possibilities in smaller cities and towns throughout the country. Many teachers complain of the working conditions but others feel that the high salaries counterbalance this. It is usual for teachers willing to work overtime to earn up to $US 6,000 per month. Savings can therefore be high. Any TEFL qualified teacher who has a university degree, a recognized TEFL certificate and is comes from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, UK & Ireland or the USA should have no problem whatsoever in finding employment teaching English in Korea.

Korea culture approaches most things differently to western cultures; you therefore need to be open minded to cultural differences. Always look at a contract, particularly terms and conditions for working and living conditions, before deciding on a position. Do extensive research on forums and boards. Ask potential employers for a contact list of present teachers. Ask questions that are important to you. Contracts in Korea are simply general conditions, which are subject to change depending on circumstances. Be flexible or develop your flexibility and negotiate.

When looking at a contract, seek clear and full definitions on salary, working hours, class size, contract completion bonus or severance pay (Taechikum), taxes and deductions, airfare home, housing and housing costs, holiday entitlement.
