Unit three covered testing and needs analysis; what limiting factors are evolved with teaching young learners; things to think about when creating a syllabus; assessments of students; exams; doing a course evaluation and what you would want to put on it. I learned that your employer might have already decided what you will teach. I also learned of different types of syllabus. The unit discusses different ways to develop a course for young learners such as level testing and needs analysis, limiting factors, assessment of students and course evaluation. For level testing, a test is administrated to the students, and then they are placed in a language level. There is a five-level scale used called EFL banding and relates close to Common European Framework. After level testing, a need analysis can be administrated to give the teacher an idea of the students? previous learning experiences and to help them with areas that can be most beneficial to them. However, sometimes there are limiting factors that keep the teacher from teaching what they feel is best such as your employer, time constraints, resources, cultural issues and students. For assessments of students, it?s important to do it regularly to measure the efficacy of the program and monitor your students? progress. There are many different types of tests that can be used when needed. In addition, when the course is completed, it is recommended to have some sort of course evaluation such as giving the students a questionnaire. This will help out the teacher a lot in knowing what can be done better in future classes. I learned that developing a course not only depends on making lessons that match the students abilities but always seeking to improve the way one teaches through the things one has noticed and from evaluations from students.
