TEFL Job Prospects by Continent
Asia
The Asian continent offers a remarkably diverse range of experiences and opportunities to a qualified EFL teacher. Many Asian countries have an enormous demand for qualified native teachers of English. As teaching in Asia remains a teachers market, salaries are amongst the highest worldwide.
Access to these jobs is often governed by the qualifications necessary to teach in each individual country. Most of the developed countries, such as Japan, Korea and Taiwan, require a university or college degree and 4-week teacher training certificate to gain a teaching position. These countries have a higher standard of living, therefore a higher cost of living. To match, salaries are also high by international standards.
China, Taiwan and Vietnam have lower standards of living, and lower salaries, but these countries possibly offer more cultural variety.
North America
There is a huge demand for teaching English in the USA. While in most countries teaching at business locations and at language schools is most common, in North America the focus is more on teaching ESL (English as a Second Language). Virtually all universities and colleges in all major North American cities have an ESL program running at any one time, as do a variety of government and charitable organizations.
Latin America
The continent of South America, together with Central America, offers a wide range and variety of teaching opportunities. The cultural diversity and Latin charm combine to make this region an attractive destination for EFL teachers. Overall, salaries are good due to the low cost of living. Most schools in the region cannot afford to advertise vacancies internationally, so most hiring is done 'on the spot'.
Western Europe
Many teachers initially gravitate to Europe as it provides less culture shock and offers good salaries and working conditions. Job prospects and teaching experiences are varied when it comes to teaching in Europe. It will certainly be easier to land a job if you are a citizen of an EU member state, but it is often not a problem if you are not an EU member. Thousands of non-EU nationals are happily teaching all over Europe, and have been doing so for many years.
Eastern Europe
The transition to a market economy in many parts of Central and Eastern Europe has resulted in a huge demand for English language teachers, particularly in the business sector. There are many opportunities teaching English in almost every Eastern European country and job offers are usually open to EU and non-EU nationals equally.
The countries in which the majority of EFL opportunities exist are further detailed in the Teaching English Abroad section of this web site.
