TEFL Course Assessment
While our courses in teaching English as a foreign language have a very practical emphasis and our trainers will do everything possible to ensure that you complete the course, there is still a need for structured assessment.
Our TEFL course assessment is split into six areas of evaluation and is uniform throughout all TEFL International TEFL course locations.
Teaching Practice Assessment
All of our teacher-training courses contain a very high practical content, which is why 50% of a TEFL student's assessment is determined through his or her approach to 'teaching practice'. The English language teaching practice element is assessed throughout the entire duration of the course, and trainees will be kept up to date on their progress through individual tutorials and teaching practice feedback.
As a teacher in training, you will be assisted in your teaching practice (TP) lesson preparation by our skilled and experienced trainers. The topic of your TP will be determined beforehand, and you will be expected to create a coherent and structured lesson plan, and achieve the aims of the lesson.
The trainer who assists you during your lesson preparation will also be the trainer who observes and comments on the lesson. As a trainee, you will be asked to identify areas that you thought went well during the lesson and areas that you think you could improve. Along with the trainer, you will identify and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the lesson. It is important that you build on areas of weakness and continue good work in stronger areas in your next TP. Should you fail to address and improve on the fundamentals of teaching practice, your overall grade is likely to drop. We look for progression during the course and it is this which forms part of your overall grade.
As the course develops, you will be expected to display additional teaching skills. These teaching skills are explored and developed during morning input sessions, and personal assignments.
English Language Teaching Program
'Material compilation' comprises 15% of your assessment, while a 'lesson observation journal', a 'grammar test' and a 'phonology test' will each constitute 10% of the total course assessment. The remaining 5% is represented by an 'unknown language journal,' which every trainee is required to submit in order to attain TESOL certification.
Successful trainees receive an official certificate on the final day of the course, which acknowledges completion of the course and your overall grade achieved. You will also be issued with a recommendation letter from TEFL International, reflecting upon your performance during the course.
All certificates are unique and have their own certification number. They are registered and recorded on our database of course graduates. Should you ever need a new certificate to be re-issued, we can do this effectively and quickly.
Furthermore, each of our individual English language teaching centers is always prepared to issue a reference and further information if requested. Trainers are always on hand and prepared to provide instant references to schools interested in hiring graduates of our courses. Not all TEFL courses offer this important feature.
